Proper Digestion

Chewing your food properly is essential for adequate digestion. Meals should be eaten sitting down, in a relaxed environment to ensure that food is sufficiently chewed.

How it helps

Chewing food is more than just breaking down food to smaller parts to aid in swallowing food. Activating your saliva and stimulating digestive enzymes are fundamental steps in promoting proper digestion.

Chewing slower also helps you sense when you are actually full, as it takes about 20 minutes for your mind to sense fullness.

How Much?

How much is enough chewing for proper digestion?

According to studies food should be chewed about 32 times, foods that are harder to chew, such as steak and nuts may need up to 40 chews per mouthful. For foods that are softer such as mashed potato and watermelon you can get away with chewing just 5-10 times.

Easy Eating Tip … from Japan

Starvation-inducing diets du jour aren’t the way to a better body. What matters most is eating healthy, exercise and lifestyle choices.

There are tricks you can learn to help you along the way. Today, we look at the Japanese concept of Hara Hachi Bu. It’s not a fad diet concept, but merely a way to gauge how much food you are putting into your body.

This idea that originates in Okinawa, Japan -- where the average person mainly consumes lean meats, healthy vegetables, soy foods, fruits and whole grains -- is to eat until you feel that you are 80% full.

Your stomach takes about 20 minutes to register that it is “full,” so it’s a great strategy to eat slowly and stop once you start to feel somewhat full. Think you’re still hungry? Wait a half hour to see if you're still hungry, but usually your stomach will be satisfied.

Because of a healthy diet rich in anti-oxidants, Okinawans have 80% lower rates of heart disease and 50-80% lesser chance of breast, colon, ovarian and prostate cancer compared to Americans.

Healthy Eating Tip

If you struggle with figuring out when your body is 80% full, try taking away 20% the amount of food you would normally eat.

Metabolism and Weight Loss

Imagine the passport line at an airport.

People are lined up to get through the gate and the agent needs to stamp each passport before the holder can continue.

The agent can only process each passport one at a time so each person in line has to wait until their turn. As planes arrive more people appear in line and the agent keeps stamping one at a time, on and on.

Imagine your body’s metabolism is the passport agent, and the calories you eat are waiting in line to be burned.

Your metabolism has limits and can only burn off so much at a time - all day and night long - your metabolic rate can only go so fast.

Eating more calories means more time - longer lines - more time to process the food until it's all gone. So here calories are real not some meaningless number. Anything you eat will make the calorie burning line longer.

The difference between you and an airport is your body has storage for the calories. When you’re able to reduce caloric intake enough, your body senses this deficit and starts to burn the stored fat calories instead.

That’s why fitness has limits too. You can’t significantly boost your metabolism to burn calories faster. But you can shorten the weight loss line by curbing your appetite to make your body burn fat instead of food (by virtue of the food not being there!)

You may be curious about the calorie limit prescribed for you. Now you may understand why. You need fewer people in line to empty the passport waiting room!

Metabolism Matters

The Simple Science of Metabolism

Are you suprised? The way your body eliminates fat is via your lungs! The CO2 you exhale is how — the carbon of carbon dioxide comes from the food you eat. So how can we make more sense of this?

Every carbohydrate you digest and nearly all the fats are converted to carbon dioxide and water. The same goes for alcohol.

Protein shares the same fate, except for the small part that turns into urea and other solids, which you excrete as urine.

The only thing in food that makes it to your colon undigested and intact is dietary [fiber] Everything else you swallow is absorbed into your bloodstream and organs and, after that, it’s not going anywhere until you’ve [exhaled] it.
